Policy on Use by Volunteer Fire Departments
Colorado Volunteer Fire Departments/Districts (updated 3/18/13):
Historically, for Colorado Fire Departments/Districts active-duty volunteer fire fighters have been extended pricing discounts as a privilege from State new tire awards for their personal vehicles when the vehicles are used to respond to fires in their areas. All volunteer fire fighters using the price agreements to purchase their tires MUST provide to the tire dealer/distributor, at time of purchase, a letter that includes the following:
- The letter must be on “Letterhead” stationery that includes a phone number and address with the specific fire department/district, etc.
- Include the date of the letter.
- In the "Subject" line, type in the State Price Agreement number that applies to the brand of tires desired.
- Include the full name of the employee purchasing the tires and the employee's status as a current and active-duty VOLUNTEER Fire Fighter. (Note: this privilege is not for retired firefighters.)
- Include the specific vehicle information, such as make, model, year, color, and VIN number for the vehicle the tires will be used on and indicate that this vehicle is used for response as needed for duties relating to fire fighting.
- Specify the brands, makes, sizes, and quantity of tires. (Maximum of four [4] tires per vehicle, per year in a 12-month period. For emergency cases, contact the State Purchasing Office.)
- The letter MUST be signed by the Fire Chief or Marshall (or the equivalent of the ranking fire official) and have the name, title, and phone number of the signer.
Other government agency employees such as wildlife employees, emergency response employees, etc. may purchase off this agreement with prior written approval and dependent on the conditions above pertaining to the letter submittal are met in full. Letters may be signed by the specific jurisdiction State, County, or Local Officials in lieu of Fire Department officials, as needed.
Note1: In the event of a heavy fire season, contact the State Purchasing Office (303-866-4005) and additional tire purchases may be authorized in a case-by-case situation.
